The inspiration for this design comes from Acts 4:32-35. This passage gives us a glimpse into the fellowship and community that existed in the early church.

Verse 32 says, “Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.”

I really love the image of community that is presented here. This verse reminds me a lot of the college ministry at my church. It all started when me and others in the community, were trying to figure out a way to connect with others on a deeper level at church. Each of us had a desire for more outside our weekend gatherings at church. But to do so, we first had to overcome our doubts and fears.

For myself personally, the biggest fear was a fear of rejection. I didn’t want to risk exposing my deepest desires for community if there was a chance I’d be dismissed or forgotten. And I thought to myself, if I just don’t “try” to make myself available for others, then I’ll never have to worry about being rejected. And that mindset left me in a desperate place, just constantly hoping and longing for anyone to reach out.

Thankfully though, in His timing, God provided people in my life that shared similar experiences and longings. All of us were naturally drawn to one another as a result. Brothers and sisters in Christ that felt deep empathy for one another. There weren’t many of us, but we had everything in common. And that everything was Jesus.

As I reflect on this verse, I can’t help but be reminded of those individuals. Each one so vital to why the community flourished as it did. None of us could have done it on our own. Without God at the center none of it would have happened. None of us planned for any of this to happen. We just simply kept showing up. Day after day, we focused on God rather than what we lacked. And one day, we just realized that God had used our steadfastness to provide each of us loving community exactly as He intended.

Believers of God. Of one heart and soul. Willing to sacrifice for others. Without judgment or fear of rejection. Desiring to share what we had with others. Jesus in common.
