The inspiration for this design comes from my mom. This is a verse that she shared with me during a difficult period in my life during college. It was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I was struggling with my faith because of difficulties from classes and relationships. It was during this time though that this verse spoke to me clearly for the first time. My friends and I in college would always debate this topic. “How do we discern the will of God?”, “How do we know that the path we are choosing is what God would want?”, “What would Jesus do in this situation?”

These questions always had us talking in circles and it never really made sense to me until I looked closely at this verse. Particularly these words, “Lean not on your own understanding”. It was in that moment that I understood, that following the will of God is not about knowing exactly what to do, where to go or what path to follow, but instead it was about surrendering our own understanding to God’s will and allow Him to lead us. But then another question came up, how exactly do I allow God to lead me? And God eventually revealed to me the path forward, by simply abiding.

While the idea of abiding sounded simple in my mind, the steps to implement that in my life were incredibly difficult and took many long seasons of struggle and discouragement. But by choosing to say “yes” to God’s word each day, slowly but surely, I learned more about God’s character and His will for my life. I read about Jesus’ ministry through the book of Mark with my church, and as we discussed the actions and selflessness of Jesus, I slowly began to understand what it meant to discern the will of God.

By taking the active steps to understand God’s desires and character through the reading of His word. We can give ourselves a better chance at choosing the path that honors Him. Resulting in a deeper connection and relationship with Him which is ultimately His desire for us. By leaning less on our own understanding and more on God’s understanding, we can use God’s word as a compass to point us towards the right path.
