Growing up playing soccer and basketball, I have always hated running. It was always my least favorite part of practice. Whether someone had just missed a free throw, or we gave up too many goals, running just seemed pointless, just a punishment for not being good enough or messing up. It was during these runs that I always felt like giving up. But that mentality changed when I was training to make the soccer team in high school. I had previously been cut from the team during my freshman and sophomore years, and I was frustrated because I felt like both times, I could have tried harder but instead gave up too early and as a result did not perform to the best of my ability. I wanted to get into better shape for the upcoming year of tryouts, so I started running, one mile, every day, for two years straight. Initially it felt pointless, why was I running so much? This was tiring to do every day. Was this even worth it? What if I get cut again? Will this make any difference at all?
But during what seemed like pointless suffering, God’s purpose and will for my life began to shine a light on the situation. I realized that I was putting myself in the position of wanting to give up so many times, that eventually I learned to resist it and push beyond what my brain and body were telling me. I didn’t realize this at the time, but God was building up the fruits of patience and persistence in my life. He was teaching me that even when we’re tired, exhausted and struggling to keep going, we can push through with His help. God shows His love for us amid our trials and struggles. He wants us to push through them by leaning on Him, and as a result we will begin to exercise the muscles of endurance and steadfastness which are necessary to abide in Him.
Sometimes trusting God can be the most difficult thing to do. When everything around us is falling apart it can be hard at times to see God’s goodness. But I was reminded in a sermon once that goodness is not about prosperity but instead about nearness. And that is something that we can trust in, the truth that God will never leave us nor forsake us.
